Spyro don't just glide, he can also breathe fire, charge and he can sometimes use powerful, upgraded versions of his abilities such as Superflame, Supercharge, Superfly, Invincibility and Ice Breath (he first obtained it from a fairy in the Frozen Altars realm in Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon but this ability only lasts as long as he stays in that level) which can be accessed by walking through the Power-up Gates which are described as two pyramid poles with magical sparkles sparkling at the centre and a sign of a power-up to indicate the type of power-up. Sometimes, there is a time limit bar which is shown on the screen to show how much time you have left to use the power-up before the time is up. However, they only last for a brief period of time. Throughout the original series, he have gained a lot of abilities during his adventures and occasionally, the abilities can be gained by using colourful orbs but only in the final showdown against Ripto. Other than that, he have other skills and attacks like climbing, swimming underwater and on the surface, hover, dive underwater, Horn Dive, Headbash, Wing Shield, Bubble Breath, Water Breath, Whirlwind Breath and so forth.
Personality wise, his personality and traits are very similar to Jake's and they both can skateboard. Though, Spyro have learned how to skateboard from his second best friend and training partner, Hunter.
